Gardener at Ballikinrain Castle 1792, 1797.  Was witness to baptism of Alexander HARVEY in Culvaccan (Killearn 1797).

Since Agnes HARVIE was reckoned to be about 80 in 1841, we might expect to find that her husband was born around 1760.

It is assumed, at this stage, that the birth and marriage records for Mary refer to the same person.

HAMILTOUN (1792),  HAMMILTON (1821), HAMILTON in later records.  Was living in Dunmore Street, Balfron by 1821.  Members of the family lived in this road for over 100 years.

Feuar (1828), Weaver (1830), Cotton Hand Loom Worker (1841), Weaving Agent (1851), Proprietor Grocer (1861), Grocer (1862).  One of four Census Enumerators for Balfron in 1841.  Said to have fought at the Battle of Waterloo (1815).

James and Agnes's two eldest sons and daughters bear the names of their grandparents according to the traditional Scottish naming custom.

Cartwright.  At home in Balfron (1841).  1851 census record not traced.  By 1853, living in Glasgow.  In 1881, living in Glasgow with six surviving children.  In 1891, in Glasgow with the two unmarried children.  Moved to Hounslow, England to live with son, John, in 1920.

Medical missionary.  It appears that Alex HAMILTON first went out to Nyasaland (Malawi) in May 1888, under the auspices of the Glasgow Union of YMCAs Foreign Mission Society.  When home in 1893, he was associated with Bathgate Mission, Glasgow, and returned to Africa to join the Zambesi Industrial Mission that April (the ZIM had been founded the previous year).  He lived in Mitsidi, Blantyre.  He worked among those building the railway to Blantyre and it is understood that he was made a Chief.  First Mayor of Blantyre August 1913.  Returned to U.K. February 1914.
